Wayne Miller

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Miller began his career as a research assistant in neuropharmacology at Smith, Kline & French Labs in Philadelphia, where he was born and raised. In the mid 1970's his research at SK&F was focused on Parkinson's and schizophrenia. However, his greatest interest was on the pharmacologic asymmetry between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. When he was 19, Miller was elected as a student member (one of the youngest ever selected at the time) of the New York Academy of Sciences.

After attending the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Miller was invited to visit Cal Tech by Roger Sperry, the famed Cal Tech neuroscientist and winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Miller, drawn to the natural beauty of the Northwest chose instead to complete his undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon, receiving a B.S. in Natural Sciences. After receiving his undergraduate degree, Miller left science research and began his career in finance. Prior to establishing his own SEC registered investment advisory firm he served as a senior account executive in a regional pension administration firm, then as a specialist in the employee benefits unit of a national brokerage firm. In the latter, he served as technical support to 14 executives in the design, installation, and funding of complex retirement and estate plans for privately held businesses. The net worth of his largest client was measured in ten figures.

Miller has held various securities licenses throughout his career and served as the President and Chief Investment Officer of an SEC registered investment advisor for many years. After the corporate scandals of the early 2000's Miller was inspired to action and shifted his focus to institutional consulting. He authored an ERISA Fiduciary Governance training program that was endorsed by Financial Executives International (FEI), the largest association of finance officers in North America. The first program of its kind in the country, the training reflects Miller's 1500+ hours of emotional intelligence training and the integration of such principles into a pension and investment management environment. That training was geared toward creating greater efficiency and effectiveness in a complex multi-variant environment. This approach to pension governance was adopted by numerous pension Plan Sponsors as the governance framework for large multi-billion dollar pools of retirement funds.

Miller has been a frequent speaker at national conferences including those of FEI, the AICPA, the International Foundation for Employee Benefit Plans, the Profit Sharing and 401(k) Council of America, the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, Plan Sponsor magazine and FI360. The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) recognized his expertise in fiduciary governance by appointing Miller as Chairman of their national conference program dedicated to the topic of Board level responsibilities for oversight of ERISA retirement plans (October ‘08). It was the first time in the history of the NACD such a program had been offered to its membership.

As an efficiency expert in pension fund management, Miller has been quoted in various publications including Institutional Investor, Directors & Boards, FEI, CFO, Plan Sponsor and Workforce magazines. He has submitted testimony to Congress on fiduciary reforms, and served as a Technical Expert for the Center for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX) in Toronto. Having consulted on the fiduciary management of $110+ billion in retirement assets globally, Miller led various fiduciary governance consulting assignments for the governments of Chile, Dubai and Jordan.

In Feb 2007, the Staff of the Board of Governor's of the US Federal Reserve Bank asked Miller to submit a bid for constructing a program to train bank examiners to audit the fiduciary conduct of banks. However, the program, designed in collaboration with senior attorneys from White & Case in New York was never adopted. In Dec 2007 the Office of the President of the World Bank invited Miller to a bank- sponsored conference in Cyprus on the topic of Pension Reform in the Middle East and North Africa. Attended by representatives of 12 Arab and Muslim governments, Miller was the only American at the conference. He considers that experience to be a highlight of his pension finance career.

In May of 2009 Miller was invited by senior staff at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, along with representatives from other federal agencies with banking oversight responsibility, to address a Fed- sponsored conference on the topic of fiduciary governance. Miller's presentation focused on the institutional challenges of implementing process improvement and an emotional intelligence framework for assessing organizational obstacles to engineering such improvement.

Since 2000 Miller served in an advisory capacity to the management of various biomedical device companies. Along the way, he has gained the support and counsel of dozens of leading physicians, scientists. In Jan 2012, Miller was one of 1000 professionals chosen to attend the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation inaugural Innovation Summit. In June of 2015 Miller finished an assignment in which Nura served as a technical advisor to the USAF Medical Service on the topic of Integrative Medicine.

With credentials and experience in multiple disciplines, Miller created Nura Health to focus on the task of rationalizing the finance function in healthcare. The company is a Social Purpose Corporation domiciled in the State of Washington. Having spent 20,000+ hours examining the healthcare ecosystem, he saw the opportunity to apply an Economic Value Added (EVA) lens to healthcare capital on behalf of large self-funded employers. Nura Health's technology Platform is a tool designed for that purpose.

Miller, and his wife of 33 years, have two grown daughters and live with their dogs, on an Island in the middle of Puget Sound – near Seattle. He can be found most weekends tending to his organic garden.
